Peter’s texts said he went to her house in search of her when she didn’t show at the inn, so she flew over the back roads, only pausing for pedestrians when necessary, all the while, feeling sick in the stomach, thinking about him waiting on her while she spent time with Ford.

By the time she arrived, she was two hours late, and guilt bloomed in her chest.

The sun had disappeared in a fiery blaze on her way home. It had been a beautiful sunset, one she should’ve shared with Peter instead of wasting time at work.

After checking the porch and his car and finding them empty, Andi tried his cell, but he didn’t answer.

Her heart raced as she wondered where he could’ve gone, before realizing he must’ve grown tired of waiting and headed down to the cove.

Andi hurried through her yard, up the dunes, and past the sea oats, down the rocky bluff that led to the cove where, there in the shadows, she saw a man’s figure. One she recognized.

He stood with his back to her, his hands shoved in his pockets as he stared out at the sea.

Slowing her gait, she approached with caution as she tried to contemplate an excuse good enough to explain having lost track of time but came up short.

“Peter?” she called out.

But when he didn’t turn, she said, “Peter, I’m so sorry.”

Finally, he pivoted to face her, with his eyes trained on the sand by his feet. “Where were you?”

Andi swallowed. Only a few weeks into the summer, and already she’d failed him. It wasn’t exactly the vote of confidence she had hoped for. She needed to prove to Peter that staying in Bayshore a little while longer was no big deal. When her mother was sick and she was caring for her, Peter had been so kind and understanding. He’d patiently clung to the life they had in New York, knowing it would only be a matter of time before she’d return.

It had been enough to sustain them. But things were different now.

“I was at work. Ford offered to help me with my manuscript because I’ve been having trouble and . . .” she trailed off when Peter shot her a dark look.

“So you were with him when I was standing here waiting for you like an idiot.” He shook his head.

“It’s not like that,” she said, pleading for him to believe her with outstretched hands.

How could she convince him to tough it out a little longer if she was going to drop the ball like this? Even when her mother was alive, and he’d come for a visit, Andi had carved out the time. What was her excuse now?

“Then what’s it like, Andi. Please explain, because the first time I came to visit, all we talked about was him and how amazing this job was for you. And now, I come back to visit, and you stand me up to spend more time with him.”

“I was stuck on the ending,” she blurted.
